In this aria from the final act of the opera, Arabella returns to offer forgiveness and a clear glass of water (a symbol of her acceptance of his marriage approval) to Mandryka, her suitor. Mandryka had mistakenly believed that Arabella betrayed him, but realized his error and sincerely regretted the way he treated her.

In this Act I aria, Susannah admires the beauty of her surroundings outside the small cabin in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee where she has spent her whole life thus far. She expresses her desire to travel beyond her humble surroundings, but is torn by her attachment to the mountain’s natural beauty.
